second day of the 2016 Geneva Motor Show with an announcement that it is
now developing a motorcycle. The Honda Spine was confirmed for 2017, with a
proposal still pending for the next bike in Honda's lineup.
Honda also plans to make electric-vehicle battery cells, for
the batteries in its new model, at a facility to be built in
Kyoto, Japan. The company's first priority will be battery packs for
its hybrid vehicles, but the expansion is necessary in light of its plans
to make a sporty electric motorcycle.
Honda said the battery plant will have an annual capacity of
approximately 2,500 cells for cars and small sport-utility vehicles.
It is expected to begin operation in fiscal 2018.
At the Geneva Motor Show, Honda showed a concept electric
vehicle called the Hachi-Neko, in which the rear end resembles a cat's
head. The name of the vehicle in Japanese means "honey cat," which
is appropriate, given the cat-like look of the sleek and wide rear end.
Honda chose the name of the electric vehicle after calling
on its existing Honda Spine -- a chassis design that is compact and
lightweight -- to serve as the basis for the Hachi-Neko.
The Hachi-Neko has a wheelbase of 2,114 millimeters (about
8 feet), a track of 2,540 millimeters (9 feet) and a center of gravity
of 1,871 millimeters (about 6.7 feet). The volume of the Hachi-Neko
takes up approximately 1,075 cubic meters (about 15 feet by 20 feet by
12 feet).
