The 1996 film Romeo & Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film was not well received by critics, but it became a blockbuster nonetheless. The movie has grossed over $173 million worldwide and received six Academy Awards nominations. Romeo and Juliet is the story of two love-torn teenagers who unexpectedly fall for each other despite their feuding families, dire social circumstances, and religious differences. This classic tale couples the sophistication of Shakespeare's text with contemporary themes of teenage romance. The film is set in Verona, Italy, in 1595. This film is based on the story by William Shakespeare. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young actor who has never known any love; Juliet (Claire Danes) is the wealthy daughter of the house of Capulet. The cast also includes Carey Mulligan as Juliet's friend Rosaline/Gloriana, and Anne Fletcher as the film's director. The original score for this film was composed by Mark Isham (also known for his work on films such as "Streets of Fire", "Armageddon" and "Deep Blue Sea"). The film was shot in Prague, Czech Republic, Gdańsk (Poland), Venice (Italy), Verona (Italy), and at the Cinecittà studios in Rome. In Prague, the "Capulet" estate was reconstructed in a royal park in the historical center of the city. In Venice, sets were built on location to represent houses from Verona. The director's residence was built for this purpose in a Venetian palazzo. The film's digital effects were produced by Framestore in London and Berlin Studio Babelsberg in Germany. Originally, the screenplay was written by Australian playwright John August. However, when director Baz Luhrmann decided he wanted to make a modern interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, he requested that August's screenplay be rewritten in a more 'contemporary language'. In 1996, three different screenplays were submitted to Baz Luhrmann for consideration: that of August; of Scott Frank; and of Craig Pearce. The director chose the latter two to develop further. In March 2013, it was announced that Danes and DiCaprio would star in a 3D adaptation directed by Carlo Carlei. Principal photography began in Prague in September 2013. The film was released in theaters on April 10, 2015.The film won the 1996 Palme d'Or at Cannes. At the 1996 Oscars, one of the film's cast members, Claire Danes, and the film's writer and co-producer Scott Frank both received Academy Award nominations for "Writing Adapted Screenplay." In 1998, "Romeo & Juliet" was nominated for five awards at the British Academy Film Awards: Best British Film, Best Supporting Actor for Tom Conti (who won), Best Production Design (Giles Nuttgens), Best Original Music Score (Mark Isham) and Most Promising Newcomer (Claire Danes). cfa1e77820
